On Thursday 21st August, seven members of Croydon HF Ramblers undertook this semi-rural five-mile walk. Starting from Coombe Lane tram stop, we followed picturesque footpaths over Shirley Hills. After crossing Upper Shirley Road, we took another semi-rural footpath, emerging on Shirley Church Road, along which we headed south, climbing steadily. After turning east through Kennel Wood and crossing Shirley Common, we entered Three Halfpenny Wood, which morphs into Spring Park, before dropping down to the playing fields at Sparrows Den. Unfortunately, as we approached the cafe, our drop-off point where we were due to take a break, three members of the group saw the bus approaching and hurried off to catch it, missing the group photo, so apologies for that! After our break we continued past the church and through the recreation ground to Coney Hall. Finally, we made our way over Hayes Common to our end-point at the station. In near perfect conditions, with light cloud and sunny intervals, this was a most enjoyable walk!
