The Capital Ring; Crystal Palace to Streatham, Wednesday 6th August

posted 12th August 2025

On Wednesday 6th August, five members of Croydon HF Rambling Club met at West Croydon Station for the short train journey to Crystal Palace, where we were joined by three more. As this section of the Capital Ring is quite short, we began by doing a circuit of Crystal Palace Park. Unfortunately, we were not able to walk past the Dinosaurs, as this part of the park is currently being refurbished.
On leaving the park, we wound our way uphill to emerge on Church Road, the highest point of the walk. After descending through Westow Park, we passed through Norwood Recreation Ground, where Catherine left us as she lives quite close by. After another short climb, we reached Beulah Hill. Having headed west for half a mile, we dropped down Biggin Hill, with splendid views over central Croydon, passed through Biggin Wood and long Covington Way before entering Norwood Grove where we climbed up to a very impressive house, the former home of the Nettlefold family. Leaving the house behind, we followed the track to the top of Streatham Common, stopping at the café for a well-earned break. In perfect walking conditions, this was a most enjoyable excursion!
