Tonbridge and the River Medway, Sunday 21st June
posted 24th June 2026
On a warm sunny Sunday, five of us took the train to Tonbridge the start of this beautiful 7 mile walk. We began with a short walk along the High Street, before turning east along the southern bank of the River Medway. After crossing the ring road, we stayed on the south side of the river until we reached The Poacher & Partridge at Tudely Hale, where we took a lengthy drinks stop. After leaving the pub, we continued east for a short distance. We then turned north, across farm fields, through a small wood and onto a country lane. Having crossed Hartslake Bridge, we joined the north bank of the Medway to begin our return to Tonbridge. Along the way, we stopped to eat our packed lunches in the picnic area at Porters Lock, where the picture shows us ‘trying’ to push open the lock gate! (Monica was behind the camera.) Afterwards, we continued to follow the river all the way back to our starting point. In very warm conditions, this was an excellent walk!
